Why I came to Dean

When I began to look for jobs my senior year of college, I knew that my skills were well-suited to the business world, but I was skeptical that I wanted to pursue such a career path—I have always enjoyed taking on new challenges and exploring a broad range of subjects, and I was afraid that a job in business would be repetitive and dull.  As I learned more about the industry, however, I became increasingly interested in strategy consulting; ultimately, I was drawn to consulting’s creative problem solving aspect and the breadth of experience that the job provides.

From there, Dean was a perfect fit for me—given my background in math and economics, the firm’s data-driven approach to problem solving appealed to me; even more importantly, however, I loved the firm’s friendly and intellectual culture.  I also liked the idea of working at a small firm, where my work would have greater impact and I would have more opportunity to develop relationships with both management and clients.

My Experiences at Dean

Although I’ve spent most of my time at Dean working within the life sciences industry, I’ve had the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of clients, business problems, and case teams.  My work has ranged from evaluating sales strategies for a flu vaccine manufacturer to assessing acquisition targets for a pharmaceutical company to exploring potential business opportunities in the Asian vaccine market.  Even as an analyst, I have traveled to meet with clients on several occasions, which has given me the opportunity to see the direct impact that my work has made.

In addition, my colleagues at Dean have been one of the most positive aspects of my experience here.  Managers and VPs continually provide an environment that is both stimulating and nurturing, and genuinely care about your professional development.  More generally, people at Dean are welcoming (doors are always open!), and the company’s social events provide many opportunities to build friendships with co-workers.

My Life in DC

DC is a truly unique place in that it offers all the excitement and culture of a big city combined with the laid back, neighborly lifestyle of the south.  I’ve enjoyed exploring all of the city’s neighborhoods, from the hopping bar scene in Adams Morgan to the museums and art galleries on the national mall, to the quaint streets of Georgetown.   The city has a great international vibe, and a buzzing political scene—it has been really exciting to be at the center of it all during election season.  On any given Saturday, I could be attending a gallery opening, kayaking on the Potomac, going wine tasting in the Shenandoah Valley, taking a class at the Washington Ballet, or meeting friends at the amazing hole-in-the wall pasta restaurant just around the corner from my apartment.  There is always something going on and something new to try, no matter what your tastes or interests may be.
