Why I came to Dean
I had known for awhile as an undergraduate that I wanted to work in business, but at first was unsure exactly what type of job would be the right one for me. I knew that I enjoyed doing research and wanted to learn about many different industries, but I also liked working with other people. As I spoke to more people who had pursued careers in banking and consulting, I realized that strategy consulting would be a great fit for my goals and interests.
Dean and Company particularly appealed to me because of its people, its small size and its career review process. During my interviews and office visit, I felt very welcomed by all the incredibly smart, friendly and outgoing people that I met. As a small firm, Dean also gives analysts the chance to take on significant responsibilities and to learn from frequent interaction with upper management very early on. I also appreciated the firm’s bi-annual career review process that would provide me with more frequent, detailed feedback on development objectives – as well as offer more possible opportunities for promotion.
My Experiences at Dean
Since I started working at Dean, I have been exposed to a wide range of industries and have been able to make real contributions to cases. Within my first month I had researched opportunities in the telecom, banking and energy industries, and worked with senior executives at a major satellite radio company to develop a marketing strategy. I am currently working on the firm’s private equity case, where I have researched a new company and industry almost every week as I help analyze potential deals. I really enjoy the fast-paced nature of this work, as well as the constant challenge of solving problems that may not have answers that are readily apparent.
I have also found everyone to be extremely willing to help a new analyst learn the ropes. Everyone’s door is always open and people are more than happy to share their skills and expertise.
My Life in DC
Having spent most of my life near New York City, I was looking to live somewhere different after graduation. Washington, DC has all the vitality and bustle of a big city combined with the comfortable familiarity of a small one. The city has an exciting nightlife and a great collection of restaurants, bars and clubs. So far I’ve met many fun and interesting people with all sorts of backgrounds and interests. I also love exploring the different neighborhoods in and around Washington such as Georgetown, Eastern Market and Old Town, Alexandria. This city truly has something for everyone.
