Why I came to Dean
As a business major, I spent much of my time in college studying the decisions companies faced from a strategic, marketing, financial, and technological level. When it was time for me to begin looking for jobs, I realized I didn’t want specialize in just one aspect of business, which made consulting an appealing career choice for me. Dean & Company specifically interested me because the casework encompassed a wide breadth of industries as well as project types. I was also impressed with the entrepreneurial feel of the firm. In addition to traditional consulting, project work includes a number of investment related cases, including work in private equity, hedge funds and energy trading.
My Experiences at Dean
As I hoped when I started at Dean & Company, my projects have put me on a path to gain a broad view of different companies and industries. In my time at the firm, I’ve worked on two very distinct cases. My first project was for a large-scale manufacturing company, where I had the opportunity to interact with clients to help them implement and track cost saving measures. Currently, I am working on a case to help a mid-size pharmaceutical company that is evaluating potential acquisition targets. I’ve found there is an important distinction between studying companies in class and working on a consulting case: actual cases include actual clients. Clients have their own interests and opinions in the future of their company, and I enjoy the opportunity to see first hand the nuances and intricacies of companies and the people who run them.
Beyond the casework itself, the people at Dean & Company create a stimulating and collegial environment. I have the benefit of working with individuals who are not only talented, but also freely giving of their time and knowledge. I’ve developed strong friendships with many of my co-workers, and I enjoy socializing with them outside of the office as well.
My Life in DC
Living in DC has been a great experience, the city is easy to navigate and always moving. I get a thrill out of living in the political center of our country. My friends and I have split our time between hanging out in our favorite restaurants and bars and exploring the varied cultural and social venues in the city, from concerts, to museums, to kickball on the National Mall, there is always a new activity for us to try.
