Why I came to Dean

When I started as an undergraduate, I was convinced that my destiny was to become a university biophysics professor. I was going to make the world a better place by conducting groundbreaking research and inspiring generations of students with my teaching. But after TFing intro physics lab, solving hundreds of problem sets, and conducting thousands of hours of lab research, I decided that academia was not for me. While I was still set on making the world a better place, I wanted to do so in a more collaborative, fast-paced, and practical manner… Then I found out about strategy consulting.

There are three things about Dean & Company that made the choice easy: its people, small size, and analytic approach to problem solving. Dean consultants I met during the interviews and office visit came across as bright, interesting, and friendly – people I have since become friends with. Further, the firm’s small size offered the chance to take on significant responsibility even as an entry analyst. Finally, its analytic approach was a good fit with my background and the way I approach problem solving.

My Experiences at Dean

This week, I am an expert on auto-injection devices (e.g., insulin pens for diabetics). However, at various periods over the last twelve months, I have also been an expert on international market entry, direct distribution, oncology drugs, pediatric vaccines, pipeline valuation, due diligence, and mergers and acquisitions. My work at Dean & Company has given me in-depth exposure to business problems in a variety of companies, industries, and functional areas, and to know that I helped develop solutions in each case is very satisfying.

I have also had the pleasure of working with great colleagues, analysts and managers alike. Dean consultants bring a wide variety of perspectives, styles, and ideas to the table, and the best idea typically wins out, regardless of who suggested it. This collegial culture has made it easy to take on additional responsibilities to accelerate professional growth, while allowing me to continue learning from my colleagues.

My Life in DC

My family lives in Manhattan and I went to school in Boston, so I have come to expect quite a lot from cities. In my mind, a good city should be full of interesting cafes, cool bars, relaxing parks, vibrant cultural centers, and above all, lots and lots of great food. I have found that DC has it all, if you look in the right places. If you want to be like me and take a swim after flipping over a sail boat seven times, the Potomac is the place. If you want to take a nice stroll, head over the Georgetown. If you are hungry or thirsty… let’s just say that there are many, many options.

Dean & Company itself has quite an active social calendar, with official events at least once a month. The annual highlights include a wine tasting, a casino night, and the amazing black tie holiday party held across the street from the White House. We also have regular softball, kickball, frisbee, and basketball games after work, all organized by employees. This past year, about ten colleagues and I tutored math and reading at a local elementary school. In general, Dean & Company employees have diverse interests, making it easy to find colleagues to participate in any activity you may be interested in.
